Hunter in World of Warcraft: Forever
A ranged attacker with a tamed pet, traps, aspects and the best kiting in the game. How the Hunter plays in Classic's design, who can play one in Forever, what Blizzard has said, and what we will check in the beta.

The short answer
The Hunter is Classic’s ranged fighter with a companion: a bow, gun or crossbow, a tamed beast that holds the enemy, and traps and aspects that decide who moves and who does not. It is the least gear-dependent class and the easiest to level. Everything below describes the class as Classic shipped it, which Forever builds on; Blizzard has promised “new abilities” across the classes and has published no Hunter-specific detail. The beta opens September 17, and this page changes as we play.

Classic's pairings per Wowhead — Classic races database and Warcraft Wiki — Playable race , checked 2026-09-13; Blizzard has not restated them for Forever and has not published the full list of additions. How it plays
- A pet from level 10. The taming quest hands over the ability; after it, any tameable beast in the world can be trained, fed and levelled. The pet tanks while the Hunter shoots.
- Ranged with a dead zone. Ranged attacks need eight yards of distance and melee needs none, so anything standing between the two ranges can only be hit with a melee weapon. Kiting is the answer, and the Hunter is the best kiter in the game.
- Aspects and traps. One aspect at a time (Hawk for damage, Cheetah for speed, Monkey to dodge), and traps laid out of combat: Freezing Trap is Classic’s most reliable crowd control.
- Feign Death. Drops threat, resets a fight, and lets a Hunter survive mistakes no other class survives.
- Mail at 40. Leather until then. Agility drives both ranged damage and the pet, so gear choices are simple.
Leveling
The fastest in Classic. Send the pet, shoot, loot, move on; the only downtime is feeding the pet and keeping ammunition stocked. The two hard stretches are the levels before the pet at 10 and the moment the first pet needs replacing at a higher level.
What Forever changes
-
Human Hunters are one of the six new race and class combinations. Combined hit and crit chances help Hunters improve the reliability of Traps, and spellcaster weapons no longer compete with theirs for level-up upgrades.

Blizzard’s Deep Dive recap names six new race and class combinations: Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin, “with more planned for future updates.”

Talent trees keep Classic’s structure: the same number of rows, milestone talents at 11, 21 and 31 points, and a new 16-point milestone. Some talents are unchanged from patch 1.12, some adjusted, and key class buffs (Divine Spirit, Blessing of Kings, Improved Mark of the Wild) are now baseline. Each race gets two active and two passive racial abilities, reworked to be stronger and more distinct.

Combat keeps Classic’s pace: an ordinary creature takes a solo player “roughly 10–15 seconds to defeat,” crowd control still matters in dungeons, and damage dealers still respect threat. Spell, melee and ranged hit chance are combined into one stat, as are the three crit chances. Paladins are the first class detailed; “more class and race details are planned through future videos and articles.”

Blizzard: class identity “remains central,” with “new abilities, new race and class combinations, and updates designed to preserve the feel of the original game.” The updates “focus on talents and abilities you notice, meaningful trade-offs, and reasons to value what each class brings.”

What we will check in the beta
- Whether ammunition, quivers and the dead zone are unchanged.
- The pet system: taming, loyalty, training points and food, against the Classic baseline.
- Any new abilities or talent changes in the three trees.
- New tameable beasts in the new zones, Mount Hyjal and the Riverglades first.
- What a Skyborne Hunter starts with on Zephras Isle and which racial abilities it brings.
Frequently asked
- Can a Skyborne be a Hunter in Forever?
- Yes. Blizzard's panel recap lists Hunter among the classes every Skyborne can play, whichever faction they choose.
- Is the Hunter still the easiest class to level?
- In Classic it is: a pet that tanks, ranged damage from level 10 and almost no downtime. Blizzard has said nothing Hunter-specific for Forever, so that is the baseline until the beta says otherwise.
- Do Hunters still need ammunition and a quiver?
- In Classic, yes: arrows or bullets in a quiver or ammo pouch, which also speeds up ranged attacks. Whether Forever keeps ammunition is on our beta checklist.
