Picking a name in a realmless Forever

Since World of Warcraft: Forever moves away from individual realms, Blizzard’s blog post explains how character names now work: each character gets a first name and a second name, and it’s the full two-part combination that has to be unique within your region, not the first name alone. Two characters can share a first name as long as their complete names differ, and the second name can be used to build a shared theme across a group of characters, such as a family or guild naming convention.

Players who prefer a plainer look can hide the second name from nameplates in the world (Options > Nameplates > “My Secondary Name”); it still shows in chat. The usual naming rules still apply, including a code of conduct the system checks across both name parts together, so splitting a restricted word between them won’t get around it. Early Name Reservation for eligible upgrade purchases runs October 27 through November 3, 2026, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Why it matters: a name being taken on Forever no longer means picking a different realm to get it — now it means finding a second name that makes the full combination unique.
