The graphics update, zone by zone
Fog, lighting and water reworked. The Wetlands fog lifts, Badlands shadows follow the sun, Ashenvale water flows.

At BlizzCon 2026, Lead Environment Artist Matt Heyman and Lead Software Engineer Jason Scott hosted a panel titled “Evolving a Timeless World” on Forever’s graphics work. Their stated guiding principle: “Everything must be authentic.”
Scott walked through three rendering systems with before-and-after examples. Fog was reworked in Dustwallow Marsh and Wetlands — in Wetlands, fog no longer hides the mountains near Ironforge, which are now visible in the distance. Lighting got a day/night pass in the Badlands, where building shadows now track the sun’s position instead of staying fixed. Water in Ashenvale now flows downstream instead of sitting still.
The panel also showed side-by-side comparisons of several zones’ broader visual update, including Duskwood, Theramore, the Barrens, Darkshore, Felwood and Durotar, plus a first look at Zephras Isle, the new Skyborne starting zone.
Why it matters: this is the clearest look yet at how far Forever’s graphics refresh goes beyond a texture pass — fog, lighting and water are getting system-level changes, applied zone by zone.
